Love languages are the ways in which people best feel loved.

Updated: Jun 17, 2022

Learning about love languages is important because it allows you to understand how someone you love might need to receive communications from you in order for them to feel loved. In this blog post, I will tell a story about the love languages of my dad.

One of my dad's love languages is food. He loves to eat with his family and friends. This is a photo of one of our meals at home.

When I grew up, my father was the only bread-winner who had a full time day job, a part-ime night job and studying part-time to complete two Masters Degrees at the University of Hong Kong. Our home is very far from the university and it took 2 hours for him to commute there. I didn't see my dad very much during his term times.

When I was young, I didn't quite feel my dad's love becasuse I was focusing on my own love language of WORDS of AFFIRMATION. However, my dad love lanuages are different from mine.

There are at least 7 types of love lanuges including:

  • Physical Touch

  • Words of Affirmation

  • Quality Time

  • Acts of Service

  • Gifts

  • Notes

  • Food

My dad's love lanuage is ACTS OF SERVICE, GIFTS and FOOD. When I understand this love lanuagues, I can feel his amazing love.

For example. My dad made it up to us by taking the whole family to holiday during the summer and we have travelled to Canada, US, China and Taiwan. He bought me unlimited amount of books and music. He paid for all my music lessons and arranged to have private singing lessons for me since I was 12. By the time I was 17, I became one of the Champions in Solo Singing in the Hong Kong School Music Festival and a founding member of the Opera Society of Hong Kong. My dad was always there to pick me up after each late-night singing rehearsal and performance. He also applied for Canadian and UK citizenship for the whole family before 1997, when Hong Kong was handed over to China.

I went to the the Western Univeristy in Canada and became a business student at the Ivey Business School. My dad supported me 100% when I followed my passion and switched to studying music instead after 1 year. I graduated with the Dean's Honour and taught music in various international schools for over 2 decades. I received the Hong Kong Scholarship on the Clore Leadershp Programme to study cultrual leadership in the UK in 2014.

Fast track to 2022, I am still very passionate about music and I will be performing in Madame Butterfly with the North Wales Opera Company this Septebmer. What I did not expect is that I also became a business owner in the UK and I run a coaching and dispute resolution company. I feel that I have got the best out of both worlds.

I am grateful to my dad for all the learning opportunities I received from him. He has been my role model for self learning, besides showering me with gifts of book, music, beautiful things … so I grew up appreciating arts and humanities.

My passion in arts and humanities enables me to receive fundings from the UK government to conduct researches in the UK. In August, I may have the opportunity to collaborate with the Winchester University to facilitate Knowledge Exchange, Cultural Heritage Management, Cultural Leadership and Environment and Social Governance for the wellbeing of future generations and Hongkongers in Wales.

Happy Father's Day, Dad! I wish I can be in Hong Kong with you now❤️
